Case Study 2: Tony Young for Council
The Problem
The 4th District seat on the San Diego City Council
unexpectedly became vacant with the sudden death of
its representative. There was special election held to
fill the seat, in which Young’s opponent, who
represented the 4th District from 1991 to 2002, came
out on top in the November special election, with 34.2
percent to Young's 23 percent. But neither candidate
had enough votes to win outright among the eight
contenders so a special run-off election was scheduled
to decide the final winner. Young was endorsed by the
BIA and it was important that Young got elected to
ensure a more friendly business environment for home
building.
The Solution - Crusader™
BIA San Diego employed Crusader™ to reach industry
members in the 4th District and to inform them of the
industry’s preferred candidate in that race. With
his opponent’s strong name recognition, it was
important to provide an extra push for Tony Young,
while respecting the fact that a vote is a very
personal matter. Therefore, BIA sent out an alert to
those who wanted to vote along with their industry
association. It included his biography and photo. (SEE
THE ALERT)
The Result
Tony Young was elected to the 4th District seat of the
San Diego City Council. (SEE
ARTICLE) And all of the people who helped out
through Crusader™- to get Young elected were
rewarded by the outcome. They saw the tangible results
of their involvement, making for a satisfied group of
supporters who will likely get involved on their
industry’s behalf again in the future.
